Thank you for sending in pumpkins.  If you haven't yet, please do so by Friday.

Last week we worked on our math journals.  Learning the process of solving different word problems.  We were able to have Mrs. Jones come visit us again, and she went over the rules of the ibooks, and how to sign on and get on a website.  We will be using them once a week for different activities.  In math, we practiced stations and even got to use the ipads to practice math.  We are working on subtraction, as well as continuing to practice our addition facts.  In writing, we continue to work on our counting book as well as writing about small moments.  We learned and practiced how to use a graphic organizer to help organize our ideas in writing. In science, we learned what wingspan means and how big is the biggest bat and owl's wing span.  We even pretended we had wings and measured our wingspans and made a class graph to show these.  We also continued to talk about plants and used an app on the ipad called 'Show Me' to label the parts of the plant.

Don't forget to keep reading each night!

The First Grade team has some fun activities planned for Halloween day.  We are calling this, “Pumpkin Camp”.  Each child will need a pumpkin to use for various math and science related tasks.  Please send in a pumpkin -that your child can carry - by October 26th.  It would be helpful to write your child’s name on the bottom of the pumpkin with a “sharpie” marker.

We were very busy this week.  Mrs. Jones came in and taught us the rules of the ipads and we were able to practice using them. We also visited Mrs. Crawley's room, where we participated in a science lesson on seeds using her 'Smartboard'.  We got together with our 3rd grade buddies too and got to buddy read with them.  In science we talked about what plants need to grow, and set up an experiment planting seeds in different things and places.  Make sure to ask your first grader how this is going and which seed started to grow on Friday.  We started our theme unit on Bats and Owls and using different websites and the Elmo learned some really cool facts about both.  We did some art projects for both and continue to practice writing directions after each project. In math we continue to work on 'Part-Part-Whole' and how to find the missing part when we know the whole and one of the parts.

Please make sure your child continues to read each night and record their books on their reading log to be returned on Friday.  I have yet to get them all back each Friday.

Dear Families,

We are off to a great start in First Grade.  Ms. B and Mrs. Anthony have done a wonderful job getting us into the routines of our classroom. I have enjoyed the extra time off to be with my son Colin. I have been researching new ideas, and am excited to get back in the classroom room.  One of the new things I am trying this year is this blog.  I will post reminders, as well as updates on what we are doing in the classroom!  Please visit it frequently to find out about all our adventures in first grade.

I look forward to working with you as we support your children in this year of learning!!
